Frontpage > For consumers > Home and home technology > Toys Toys The safety of toys Ask pertinent questions before you buy a toy. Get necessary information and operating instructions from the seller, preferably in writing. Check to see if soft animals and dolls are washable. Make sure that car wheels and other parts are properly attached. Throw away plastic packaging to keep it out of children's reach. Watch out for small toys inside chocolate eggs, which can be dangerous if swallowed. Avoid toys which make a lot of noise. Pistols and whistles can damage a child's hearing. Avoid plastic toys which are easily breakable. Toys intended for children under the age of 3 should be especially durable and should not break even when thrown or beaten. Watch out for plastic stickers and details on rattles, which the child can peel off. Feel the toy. Dangerous stuffing materials such as plastic beads usually make a crackling sound or feel grainy. Ask the seller about materials. Be especially careful if you buy toys at a fair or other temporary point of sale. If you suspect that a toy is not safe, you can contact your municipal health inspector or Tukes.
