The Finnish Safety and Chemicals Agency (Tukes) has finished its accident investigation of the explosive fire that took place on March 2nd, 2018, at an aerosol filling plant in Sipoo. One person was injured in the accident, and the production facilities and equipment were destroyed. To avoid similar accidents in the future, the investigative team recommends that adequate ventilation is ensured in plants that handle solvents and gases.

9.11.2020 | The Finnish Safety and Chemicals Agency (Tukes) investigated what caused the explosion at Helsinki City Theatre on 29 June 2020, and the results are now ready. The explosion was caused by hydrogen gas that got into the sprinkler room from the sprinkler system’s pipes during the system’s maintenance. Together with indoor air, it formed a flammable mix of hydrogen gas and air. There have been no prior incidents in Finland, so it could not have been prepared for.

In August, the Finnish Safety and Chemicals Agency Tukes authorised the construction of a new terminal for liquefied natural gas (LNG) at the Hamina oil port. The Hamina terminal will be Finland’s third LNG terminal. Its commercial commissioning is planned to take place in the first half of 2021. Tukes is responsible for issuing the construction licence for the natural gas storage, as well as for the monitoring of the safety of storage.

All currently qualified personnel must renew their qualification by 12 March 2029 at the latest to keep the qualification valid. The renewed qualification is valid for seven years, after which the qualification must be re-applied for. In addition, the qualification requirements will be extended to persons handling hydrocarbons, carbon dioxide and ammonia.
