This autumn, the Finnish Safety and Chemicals Agency (Tukes) has received many reports on cat poisoning due to rodenticides entered in the organ system of cats after having eaten poisoned mice. Tukes points out that instructions for use must be followed when using rodenticides. Neighbours must be warned of the use of rodenticides so that they can keep their pets leashed during the use of rodenticides. Primarily, Tukes recommends the use of mechanical mousetraps.

Anticoagulant rodenticides, i.e. rodenticides preventing blood coagulation, are a health and environmental hazard. Rodenticides should only be used, if absolutely necessary, and instructions for use should be followed.

There were fewer fires than in the previous year, in which there were 2,400 fires. Electrical stoves or ovens were the cause of 860 fires, compared to over 900 in the previous year. Stove fires are rarely caused by a fault in the stove itself. Instead, they are caused by carelessness. A total of 13 people lost their lives in eight separate electrical fires.

14.12.2023 | The Finnish Safety and Chemicals Agency (Tukes) has discovered that Christmas-themed candle arrangements that present a fire safety risk have been sold to consumers. Tukes has imposed a temporary sales ban on the hazardous products. If you have bought such a candle arrangement, stop using it immediately! In a hazardous candle arrangement, decorations are too close to a candle and may very easily catch fire.

Fireworks generate a lot of particles. They temporarily reduce the air quality, especially at the turn of the year in urban areas where there are a lot of fireworks. HSY and Tukes advise that the harm caused by fireworks can be lessened by observing the restrictions concerning the time and place for using them and by avoiding smoky places.
