Other EU legislation potentially applying to machinery

In addition to the Machinery Decree, machinery may be subject to other statutes. The relevant statutes depend on the risk assessment performed by the manufacturer.

Below is a list of statutes most commonly applied to machinery, accompanied by links for more information.

Low Voltage Directive (LVD) 2014/35/EU

The Low Voltage Directive does not apply to electrical machinery in terms of procedures concerning placing on the market and putting into service. This means that the declaration of conformity of the machinery should make no reference to the Low Voltage Directive. However, machinery that is placed on the market by applying the Machinery Directive must comply with equivalent requirements to those applied to equipment placed on the market under the Low Voltage Directive.

Certain kinds of machinery that are within the scope of application of the Low Voltage Directive are excluded from the scope of the Machinery Directive. These include, for example, the following electrical and electronic products:

  • household appliances
  • audio and video equipment
  • information technology equipment
  • ordinary office machinery
  • circuit-breakers and switches

Outdoor Noise Directive 2000/14/EC

So-called Outdoor Noise Directive (Noise Emissions Directive, Equipment Noise Emissions Directive) has been brought into force in Finland by the Government Decree on Noise Emission Levels from Equipment for Outdoor Use 621/2001. This decree applies only to certain equipment specified separately in the decree. With regard to machinery intended for consumer use, these include, for example, lawnmowers, chainsaws, hedge trimmers, leaf blowers, leaf collectors and high pressure water jet machines.

The decree contains provisions on, for example, environmental noise limits, noise marking requirement and the methods of measuring the noise emission levels and indicating the noise level on the equipment.
