Safety Gate system for dangerous products

The Safety Gate system for dangerous products is an information exchange system of the European Community through which the Commission and the Member States exchange information on dangerous products and the relevant measures taken. Tukes acts as the national contact point for the system in Finland.

The system applies to

  • consumer goods intended for consumer use, such as toys, electrical equipment, motor vehicles and cosmetic products
  • products intended for professional use and products posing an environmental risk.

Pharmaceutical products, medical equipment and supplies and foodstuffs, for example, are not covered by the system.

Market surveillance authorities have a legal obligation to report a product found on the market that poses a serious risk and the measures taken to eliminate the risk to the Safety Gate. The authorities of other Member States then use the information provided to determine whether the product can be found on their respective markets.

Benefits for consumers and companies

More than 2,000 dangerous products are reported to the Safety Gate each year.

The European Commission publishes weekly reports on the most recent alerts on its website. You can subscribe to the weekly report via email, either in its entirety or customised to include, for example, only certain product categories or hazards or reports from specific countries.

Information in the system can also be browsed with the search function.

Consumers and companies can use the weekly reports and the search function to view risk associated with different product groups or individual products, so that they can avoid buying dangerous products. The system can also be used to check whether your home or a company's selection includes dangerous products. This can be greatly beneficial to companies, as recalling a dangerous product from the market can be highly costly.

A company that has imported, sold or otherwise distributed dangerous products to the Finnish market must take measures to eliminate the risk on its own initiative and notify the supervisory authority of the matter using the Business Gateway system.
