News letter from Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment: The Government proposes to amend the Act on the Market Surveillance of Certain Products. The proposal is related to the national implementation of the EU’s new Market Surveillance Regulation and the Regulation on mutual recognition.

The Finnish Safety and Chemicals Agency (Tukes) will start as a contact point for market surveillance on 1 January 2021. Activities will start by assembling a network of authorities.

The Finnish Safety and Chemicals Agency (Tukes) is establishing a new contact point for market surveillance, and it will be headed by Mika Toivonen. The Market Surveillance Liaison Office is a new function. Each EU Member State will establish their own office.

15.7.2022 | Finland’s first national market surveillance strategy has been drawn up for 2022–2025. The strategy pays special attention to the changing product markets, risk-based surveillance, harmonisation of market surveillance and cooperation among the market surveillance authorities. Finland’s 12 market surveillance authorities must take the strategy into account in their operations.

29.6.2026 | In a joint market surveillance project, EU market surveillance authorities identified significant shortcomings in fibre composition labelling for textile products. In more than one third of the products examined, the labelling did not correspond to the actual materials used. Of the products purchased in Finland, only one was found to contain an error relating to fibre composition.

27.5.2026 | The Finnish Safety and Chemicals Agency (Tukes) tested plumbing fixtures that had been ordered from Temu and discovered that the products come with a serious risk of water damage and issues with the safety of domestic tap water. The tests showed that two kitchen and washbasin taps, which looked like metal, were plastic and made of extremely poor quality materials. During the tests, even low pressure was enough to break the taps, which in practical use could cause significant water damage.
