In Finland, carat markings are not approved gold fineness marks. Authorised gold fineness marks in Finland are three-digit numbers, in which the fineness is expressed in thousandths. Carat refers to a concentration of 24 parts. Pure gold is 24 K. Gold jewellery purchased abroad is often marked with 18 K, which corresponds to Au750 or with14 K, which corresponds to Au585. A carat marking may be on an article in addition to the fineness mark authorised in Finland, if it is not misleading.

When you buy and sell precious metals, i.e. gold, silver, platinum or palladium by weight, you must use verified precision scales with a valid verification for the weighing. The scale must be placed in such a way that both the buyer and the seller can see the weight. For more information, see the page Scales intended for weighing precious metals.

When the registration of a responsibility mark is terminated, it is placed in a 10-year waiting period. During that period, only the previous holder can apply for it again. Only after 10 years it will be possible for other companies to apply for the mark. The idea behind the waiting period is that if a company applies for a responsibility mark that has previously been used by another company, the old products still available on the market will have been sold during those ten years. In this way, we try to avoid confusion as to who has marked the product and is responsible for it.
-
The holder of a responsibility mark may decide whether or not to publish the name of their company. If you would like to get more information, contact Tukes at [email protected].

No. If the jewellery is not made of precious metal, the terms gold, silver, or rosé gold may not be used in the advertisement, as this is misleading. Instead, the ad should read gold coloured, silver coloured, etc.
