Dangerous chemicals in industry
Storage and handling of dangerous chemicals must always comply with the relevant laws and decrees. The production plant is responsible for following the statutes.
If the scope of chemical storage and handling operations is large-scale, a permit granted by Tukes is required.
Take the following into account if chemicals are handled at the plant
- The requirements of the Act on Chemical Safety apply to any scale of storage and handling.
- The plants handling and storing chemicals must identify the risks posed by the chemicals in their operations.
- If the risks cannot be eliminated, preparations for accidents must be made.
- The work must be systematic and extend to the different stages of the plant’s life cycle.
The purpose of the legislation is to prevent accidents caused by chemicals and limit their consequences for people, property and the environment.
On these pages, you can determine the scope of your operations and find information on good practices and the permit and surveillance practices.
Surveillance of chemical plants
Large-scale storage and handling of dangerous chemicals is supervised by Tukes. Rescue authorities supervise small-scale chemical handling and storage. Assess whether the scope of your operations is large-scale or not.
To supervise the compliance of production plants with the obligations imposed on them, Tukes uses the following:
- permits
- inspections
- surveillance of documentation.
